- 1.2 (if you exercise 1-3 hours per week)
- 1.35 (if you exercise 4-6 hours per week)
- 1.5 (if you exercise 6+ hours per week)
This number will give you an approximation of your total daily energy expenditure, TDEE (total amount of calories you burn each day).
Once you have a clear understanding of your TDEE, you want to focus on eating 20% less calories than this each day.
You can compute this by multiplying your TDEE by .8.
How to Convert Daily Calories Into Macro-nutrients
If you’ve ever seen the hashtag #IIFYM, it refers to the common phrase, “If it fits your macros”.
Macronutrients, simply put, are nutrients that provide calories or energy. Nutrients, in turn, are substances needed for growth, metabolism, and other important body functions. Since “Macro” means “large”, macro-nutrients are nutrients needed in large amounts.
The three primary macronutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
With this understanding, to engage in rapid weight loss healthily, you must understand how to manipulate the amount of calories you eat from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
And while each of these macronutrients provide calories, the amounts vary:
- Carbohydrates: provide 4 calories per gram
- Protein: provides 4 calories per gram
- Fat: provides 9 calories per gram
Your macronutrient breakdown should look like this:
- Carbohydrates: 20% of daily calories
- Protein: 45% of daily calories
- Fat: 35% of daily calories
By following this breakdown, you’re able to easily understand how many grams of each macro-nutrient you should include in your “daily calorie deficit” (TDEE multiplied by .8, explained above):
Carbohydrates: Multiply your “daily calorie deficit” by .20, and then divide this by 4 (remember, each gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories per gram).
This is the number of carbohydrate grams you should eat daily.
Protein: Multiply your “daily calorie deficit” by .45, and then divide this by 4 (remember, each gram of protein contains 4 calories per gram).
This is the number of protein grams you should eat daily.
Fat: Multiply your “daily calorie deficit” by .35, and then divide this by 9 (remember, each gram of fat contains 9 calories per gram).
This is the number of fat grams you should eat daily.
For example, if your “daily calorie deficit” number is 2,200, then you’ll eat your macro-nutrients in the following gram-by-gram breakdown:
- Carbohydrates: 2200 * .20 / 4 = 110 grams of carbs
- Protein: 2200 * .45 / 4 = 247 grams of protein
- Fat: 2200 * .35 / 9 = 85 grams of fat
The point of all of this is simple… if you’re serious about losing weight, you cannot rely solely on a weight loss supplement!
